What to Order at the Turn

The halfway house can make or break your back nine. What to grab that fuels you up without weighing you down.

The turn — that quick stop between nines — is a make-or-break moment most golfers get wrong. Load up on the wrong stuff and you'll feel sluggish and heavy through the back nine. Grab the right things and you'll finish as strong as you started. Here's the smart play at the halfway house.

Fuel up, don't weigh down

You've got nine more holes of walking and swinging ahead. The goal at the turn is steady energy, not a food coma. That means leaning toward things that fuel you without sitting like a brick — and being a little careful with the greasy, heavy stuff that tastes great but drags you down by the 15th.

The turn is a pit stop, not a tailgate. Fuel the back nine — don't sink it.

Smart grabs

Go easy on these

The bratwurst-and-two-beers turn is a tradition, and hey, if you're out for pure fun, enjoy it. But if you actually care about your back-nine score, know that a heavy, greasy load plus a couple of beers in the sun is a recipe for a sloppy finish. Save the big feast for the 19th hole, after the card's signed.

The hydration rule: grab a water at the turn even if you're not thirsty — by the time you feel it, you're already behind. It's the cheapest stroke-saver at the halfway house.

Keep it light, keep it fueling, and drink the water. Handle the turn right and the back nine will feel a whole lot better than the front — which is exactly when good scores are made.
